It is said that Martial Arts was brought to China by the Buddest Monk Bodhidharma from India.  Bodhidharma is said to be the father of Zen Buddism.  He traveled to China and shared his form of meditation and self-defense exercises with Chinese Shaolin Monks to help keep them healthy and safe.  From China this style of Martial Art was exported to Okinawa where it was mixed with the local Martial Art styles.  Master Gichin Funakoshi trained in Okinawa Martial Art styles and brought his form of Martial Arts to Japan where he created the modern Martial Art style called Shotokan Karate.  Kenkojuku style Shotokan was developed by Master Tomosaburo Okano, a senior student of Master Funakoshi and his son Master Gigo Funakoshi.  My understanding is the Kenkojuku style of Shotokan was created to focus on the inner spirit of Shotokan with less focus on tournament competition.

My Sensei was a senior student of Master Tomosaburo Okano.  He came to the USA to train, teach and spread our style of Kenkojuku Shotokan Karate.  My Sensei devoted his life to training and teaching.  His unique combination of power, speed and graceful movement along with his amazing teaching skills, made him a true Master respected by all Martial Artists who were lucky to know him.
